MD5crypt Is No longer safe

I am the original author of md5crypt, I wrote it in 1995 and I consider it no longer safe for any use. Recent research has shown that a GPU can do 1M md5crypt operations per second, which means that any 8 character password is likely to be brute forced in two days.
